BRITISH STUNT REGISTER TRAINING

I qualified as an HSE Professional Scuba (Part 4) diver in January 2021. Since then I’ve worked in both the Media and Scientific industries as a Safety Diver, Camera Operator and Dive Supervisor.

I’ve worked alongside industry experts involved with productions for the BBC, ITV and Sky. Such a professionally skilled team inspired me to take my career in a new direction – A Stunt Performer with the British Stunt Register (BSR).

To apply for the BSR, you need to be highly proficient in several Physical Competencies. To accomplish this level of skill, I expect will take me a minimum of 2 years to complete.

These are a set of skills built through experience and exposure to physical stress. These are the foundations that are vital when learning and performing stunts for the film industry.

MY TRAINING PLAN

Drama

For this element, I completed a 10-day drama course at the Drama Studio London, 20 days on set in front of camera and 20 days of live shows.

In gaining these 40 days of experience, I worked as a supporting artiste (extra) on productions for Disney, Netflix, BBC, ITV and Channel 4. The live productions were harder to complete. I’ve worked on a Zombie Apocalypse open-air cinema production.

To work on set, I have an Enhanced DBS certificate dated 1st July 2022

Fighting

Currently, at the 3rd Kyu (Green Belt) level, I’ve chosen to take up Judo. Partly because I have some wrestling experience and secondly because I think the types of falls I’ll be practising would be similar to what I’d be expected to perform. I need to achieve a Competitive 1st Dan belt or Black Belt from the British Judo Association.

I train with Lowton Judo Club through the British Judo Association.

Trampolining

Trampolining is incorporated into the falling category to aid and assess good spatial awareness, body control and the ability to adapt whilst in the air, take- off or landing.

I must gain and show extensive experience over an extended period of time and demonstrate these skills in an assessed routine.

All elements must be performed at a sufficient height which is at least the candidate’s head height.

Driving

The precision diver training is solely delivered by Silverstone Rally School and covers FWD, RWD, 4WD and 4×4 followed by driving 3 rally races.

I start this training in February 2023, the first step to becoming a rally driver is an official BARS rally licence test. A BARS licence is provided by the Motorsport Association (MSA) and by obtaining one I will have demonstrated that you have met the minimum standard required to engage in competitive rally driving.

Rock Climbing

I’ve just completed this element after an exciting year practising and perfecting my skills on the crags of north Wales, Cumbria and the Peak District, I achieved the Rock Climbing Instructor award.

Next on the to do list is to be assessed by the BSR on VS4c Multi-pitch climbs in north Wales.

Horse Riding

In starting working and training with horses I have found an unbelievable zest for equine life.

Not only have I gained a wealth of experience from inside and outside of the stable, but also worked with ex-service personnel with PTSD helping them improve life through equine-based personal development.

I then went on to gain the British Horse Society’s Stage 1 Complete Horsemanship (Care and Ride) certificate.

Sub Aqua Diving

Fortunately, I have ticked this box already and continue to dive as both an HSE Diver and a Technical diver.

After several expeditions and commercial work, I’ve worked as both a dive supervisor and an in-water safety diver on set with Sky and ITV.

Unfortunately, I’ve had to sideline my passion for diving during the couple of years of training for the BSR.
